Employee of the Month for October

Missouri State Highway Patrol Trooper Walter "Corky" Burr III has been selected as the October, 2007 Employee of the Month for the Department of Public Safety.  Trooper Burr was selected for this award for the experience, training, and leadership abilities he demonstrated on August 12, 2007 during a shooting and hostage situation at the 1st Congregational Church in Neosho, MO.  Upon Trooper Burr's arrival, he joined with officers from the Neosho Police Department and Newton County Sheriff's Department and entered the church in an active shooter situation.  Officers found the suspect holding a female hostage at gunpoint with approximately 30 other hostages inside of the church, some dead and some injured.  The suspect complied with the order to drop his weapon and to surrender, and was arrested without further incident.
