Capitol Police Train for Active
Shooters during Weeklong Course
JEFFERSON CITY, June 18, 2007— Missouri Capitol
Police officers will be attending a training course that will prepare
them to better mitigate potential violence in an active shooter situation.
“The reaction required to handle an active shooter
situation is much different than other emergency situations,”
said Capitol Police Chief Todd Hurt. “This training will better
equip our officers to combat such a violent threat to our capitol’s
safety.”
The weeklong course is taught by the Missouri State
Highway Patrol. Capitol Police desires to teach officers ways to respond
more effectively to an active shooter, which is an ever growing threat
of violence in government buildings, schools and other public areas.
Capitol Police provide law enforcement, public safety
and security services over an approximately 65 acre area containing
state-owned property within the limits of Jefferson City and Cole
County.
