Firefighters Across the Nation
to Participate in Fire Safety Training
75th Fire Summer School Anniversary
JEFFERSON CITY, June 5, 2007-Starting today and continuing
through Sunday, more than 1,000 firefighters from 18 states, and Canada
will be training in Jefferson City during the annual Summer Fire School
hosted by the University of Missouri Fire & Rescue Training Institute.
This year marks Summer Fire School’s 75th anniversary.
Beginning in 1933 this event was first known as Summer Fire College
and the purpose then, which carries through to today, is to provide
the training firefighters need to perform their duties safely and
efficiently.
Randy Cole, State Fire Marshal applauds those firefighters
who have taken the initiative to attend Summer Fire School.
“The need for firefighter training is an ongoing
process. This annual fire school provides firefighters with an avenue
to attain a higher level of training not only to ensure their safety,
but the safety of their fellow firefighters and those within their
communities,” Cole said.
Firefighters have an opportunity to sharpen their firefighting
and rescue techniques with many hands on classes offered over the
next several days. In all, approximately (40) different classes are
being offered which allows the firefighter to select those classes
they have the most interest in taking. Training opportunities range
from the Basic Firefighter class to the more advanced technical training
such as Structural Collapse, Confined Space Rescue, Elevator Rescue,
and various courses related to wildland firefighting.
