Division of Fire Safety Works to Keep Kids Safe on Amusement Rides

National Safe Kids Week April 28-May 6

JEFFERSON CITY, April 27, 2007-Many Missouri families will enthusiastically travel to amusement parks and carnivals to partake in summertime festivities, and the agency charged with oversight of amusement ride safety, the Division of Fire Safety reminds parents and children to obey posted regulations.

Saturday marks the beginning of National Safe Kids Week, a time for families and communities to reflect on keeping children safe, including summertime outings involving amusement rides.

“We encourage all parents and family members to take an active role in keeping their children safe at amusement parks, fairs and carnivals,” said State Fire Marshal Randy Cole. “Always observe and follow posted rules, verbal instructions of ride operators and rider restrictions.”

In 1997, the Missouri Amusement Ride Safety Act passed and it designated the Division of Fire Safety to administer the safety program to include issuing state operating permits and conducting spot safety inspections of amusement rides. All rides must pass an annual safety inspection and any serious accident must be reported to and investigated by the Division of Fire Safety.

In 2005, 335 million people attended the over 600 American theme parks according to the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions. With this ever-increasing popular summer pastime, it is important to be vigilant in addressing amusement ride safety.

According to safekids.org, annually there are approximately 8,000 injuries and four deaths involving children under the age of 14 as a result of amusement ride incidents. Many injuries can be avoided by simply following posted rules and rider restrictions.
