Director James Applauds POST Training Centers, Grants Additional Three-Year Licenses

JEFFERSON CITY, November 1, 2006-Department of Public Safety Mark James announced eight regional POST Training Centers have been audited and granted additional three-year licenses to continue providing educational training to the law enforcement community it serves.

“These successful training centers enhance the professionalism of Missouri’s law enforcement communities and should serve as a role model for all public safety based centers,” James said.

The POST Program currently has nineteen regional basic training centers and eleven regional continuing education training centers to provide quality training to the nearly 17,000 sworn peace officers. The centers are audited every three years. If the center passes successfully they are awarded another three years to provide education to Missouri’s peace officers.

Under state law, Gov. Matt Blunt appoints the nine member commission chosen from each congressional district under the terms he elects three chiefs of police, three sheriffs, one licensed training center director, one representative of a state law enforcement agency and one public member. The commission is responsible for developing and evaluating the curriculum of mandatory basic training courses for municipal officers, deputy sheriffs, and state police. The committee also establishes minimum requirements for instructors, certifies basic training curriculum, accredits police training facilities, mandates in-service, specialized and advanced training courses, and encourages the educational advancement of law enforcement personnel.
