Blunt Commends Capitol Police
for Largest Drug Seizure in History
JEFFERSON CITY, May 2, 2006-Gov. Matt Blunt today commended
the efforts of the Missouri Capitol Police for seizing 1.68 pounds
of marijuana yesterday during an arrest on Capitol grounds, marking
the largest drug seizure for the Missouri Capitol Police in their
27-year history.
“Legislators, state employees and visitors to
the Capitol can be proud of the outstanding policing work our officers
undertake everyday to ensure our Capitol grounds are protected while
dedicated employees and lawmakers debate statewide issues and school
children enjoy Missouri’s historical sights,” Gov. Blunt
said.
Following a report of suspicious activity Capitol Police
officers responded to the Union Hotel Building at Lohman’s Landing,
near the foot of Jefferson Street. Capitol Police Chief Todd Hurt
explained his officers seized 1.68 pounds of marijuana holding an
estimated street value of $2,500. Cheyne Harris, 24 and Jerome Carter-Moore,
23 both of Jefferson City were arrested in the seizure. Officers also
recovered a 9mm semi-automatic firearm.
Felony charges are pending by the Cole County Prosecuting
Attorney’s office, as well as federal charges from the Bureau
of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). The above charges
are mere accusations and are not evidence of guilt. Evidence of guilt
in support of the charges must be presented before a court of competent
jurisdiction whose duty is to determine guilt or innocence.
