Blunt Commends Capitol Police for Largest Drug Seizure in History

JEFFERSON CITY, May 2, 2006-Gov. Matt Blunt today commended the efforts of the Missouri Capitol Police for seizing 1.68 pounds of marijuana yesterday during an arrest on Capitol grounds, marking the largest drug seizure for the Missouri Capitol Police in their 27-year history.

“Legislators, state employees and visitors to the Capitol can be proud of the outstanding policing work our officers undertake everyday to ensure our Capitol grounds are protected while dedicated employees and lawmakers debate statewide issues and school children enjoy Missouri’s historical sights,” Gov. Blunt said.

Following a report of suspicious activity Capitol Police officers responded to the Union Hotel Building at Lohman’s Landing, near the foot of Jefferson Street. Capitol Police Chief Todd Hurt explained his officers seized 1.68 pounds of marijuana holding an estimated street value of $2,500. Cheyne Harris, 24 and Jerome Carter-Moore, 23 both of Jefferson City were arrested in the seizure. Officers also recovered a 9mm semi-automatic firearm.

Felony charges are pending by the Cole County Prosecuting Attorney’s office, as well as federal charges from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). The above charges are mere accusations and are not evidence of guilt. Evidence of guilt in support of the charges must be presented before a court of competent jurisdiction whose duty is to determine guilt or innocence.
