Gov. Blunt Announces $7.8 Million
in Homeland Security Grants to Benefit Missouri Fire Departments
JEFFERSON CITY, August 25, 2005—Gov. Matt Blunt
announced today that Missouri will receive a total of $7.8 in federal
grants which will aide 76 Missouri fire departments. The grants are
the first in a series of Firefighter Grant Awards from the federal
government.
Awards are granted in three different categories: operations
and safety, vehicle acquisition, and the third category is prevention
and safety programs. Grant funding for expenses such as vehicle acquisition
is important. A standard fire engine can cost well over $200,000 and
a ladder truck can cost around $1,000,000.
Michael Chapman, Homeland Security Director explained
that homeland security dollars go to fire protection agencies for
good reason.
“Anytime there is a disaster, either natural or
terrorism, fire protection groups are some of the first responders
to the scene,” Chapman said. “This federal aid boosts
Missouri’s ability to respond to and protect our citizens.”
