State Fire Marshal Says ‘No
Open Burning During Drought’
JEFFERSON CITY, July 22, 2005— The State Fire
Marshal is urging all citizens to refrain from conducting any open
burning due to the persistent and continuing drought conditions throughout
the state. The lack of rainfall over the past few months and recent
extreme temperatures has created ideal conditions for a small fire
to rapidly become uncontrollable.
Fire forecasting maps reflect that most of Missouri
ranges from abnormally dry conditions to severe drought conditions
located within the east and central portions of the state.
“Not only is the land and personal property affected
by fire, but firefighters responding to natural cover fires are placing
themselves at risk for injury or death,” said State Fire Marshal
Randy Cole.
Local governmental entities have adopted and enforce
local open burning bans. Violating a local burn ban may result in
criminal charges. You should contact your local fire department concerning
local open burning restrictions or ordinances.
