Not all Bars Will Be Open on Sunday July 3rd

JEFFERSON CITY, July 1, 2005—The Division of Alcohol and Tobacco Control reminds Missourians that due to state law, only bars that have a Sunday liquor license will be allowed to operate on July 3rd, and those bars must close at regular Sunday night closing time.

Missouri statute states that when certain holidays fall on a Sunday, those establishments without a Sunday liquor license operate and those establishments with Sunday liquor licenses may remain open as late as they would any other day of the week. Those holidays include St. Patrick’s Day, July 4th, New Year’s Eve, Super Bowl Sunday, and the Sunday prior to Memorial Day and Labor Day.

This year, because July 4th falls on a Monday, it does not meet the holiday exception noted in state law. Alcohol and Tobacco Control state supervisor Dale Roberts asks that patrons be aware of this and make holiday plans accordingly.

“Because July 4th is one of the Sunday free days allowed through statute, there is a potential for miscommunication between bar owners and patrons this year,” Roberts said. “Unfortunately this July 4th falls on a Monday, not a Sunday, and we do not want people getting upset because they do not understand the statute.”
