The JJDP Act of 1974 was designed to help state and local governments prevent and control juvenile delinquency and to improve the juvenile justice system. The purpose of the Act was to protect juveniles from physical and psychological harm, and to emphasize the need for community-based treatment for juvenile offenders.

To be eligible to receive funding, OJJDP requires Missouri to verify compliance with certain criteria:

  • Deinstitutionalization of Status Offenders (DSO)
  • Jail Removal
  • Sight and sound Separation
  • Disproportionate Minority Contact
